Hey btw if you don’t know how to program, you should check out [novelty], which is a free Visual Novel creation software. Absolutely no programming required, and it’s super easy to use, I played with it some when I was a teen but the only reason I didn’t do much with it is cuz I made my story complicated and had like 5000 different branching routes that kept spawning new routes and made myself confused LMAO

But yeah, it’s a WYSIWYG with a really straight-forward GUI, if I remember correctly.

It even comes with some free backgrounds and characters and stuff, and this is what it looks like:

Did I mention it’s super duper free? It hasn’t been updated since 2010, but it has basically all you’d need to make a simple visual novel.

Just make sure your DirectX runtime is updated, cuz it can act buggy if it’s outdated, but this program is so old that I doubt it’d even be an issue lol

I Want to Care About Your Protagonist

The number one reason I stop reading a story is because I just don’t care. I don’t care if your protagonist lives or dies. I don’t care about the stakes. I don’t even really understand who they are. I’m sure a lot of readers are like me in that way. They want to feel emotionally connected to the characters in some way. They want a reason to keep reading.

If you’re finding your protagonist isn’t that interesting or you don’t know how to improve the way you’re writing them, try these tips:

Start Right Away

Don’t make your readers wait to find something to care about. Get your message across as quickly as possible. Who is your protagonist? What do they want? What’s threatening what they want? There are subtle ways to let readers in on your protagonist’s life without giving away everything at once, so don’t info-dump. Most people will stop reading if there’s nothing something interesting happening within the first chapter. This doesn’t mean there needs to be tons of explosions and death—we just need to understand what the deal is.

Make the Stakes Reasonable

The stakes can’t be too low or too high. I know this sounds confusing, but it needs to be something the reader can fully grasp. The stakes should directly impact the protagonist in some way. In other words, readers aren’t going to care too much about your protagonist being 5 minutes late to work. They’re also going to have trouble caring about a fictional planet light-years away being destroyed. You need to give us a reason to care and have the stakes match the tone of the story.

Give us a Reason to Like Them

Protagonists need to be likeable in some way. I’m sure some writers would argue with me on that, but I need a reason to root for the main character. Sure, there’s such thing as an anti-hero, but they usually have some redeeming qualities. Let your readers know why your protagonist is a decent person. Do they have family they care about? Are they protecting something? Why should we like them? Take some time to focus on these questions.

But Don’t Make Them Too Good

Flaws are very important if you want readers to care about your protagonist. A “too perfect” protagonist is very annoying and won’t feel real. Give them some flaws that explain their sometimes less-than-perfect reactions to situations. Are they too quick to act? Are they sometimes a little selfish? Do they crave power in some way? No one in this world is flawless, so your characters shouldn’t be either.

Your OCs are off on an adventure! Whether they’re on a mission or just slaking their wanderlust, this is a great opportunity to spend some quality time with the squad. What could possibly go wrong?

Which OC is the driver? Where are the other OCs sitting in the vehicle?
What form of transportation are your OCs using (RV, motorcycles, on foot, etc.)?
What’s playing on the radio?
Imagine your OCs reacting towards staying overnight at an incredibly shady motel
Which OC gets homesick nearly immediately? Do they get over it?
Imagine your OCs getting lost
Which OC yells “HORSE” whenever they pass by horses?
What does your OC do to pass the time on a long stretch of road?
Imagine your OCs playing I Spy
Which OC brings a guitar to serenade the other OCs as they travel?
What happens when your OCs meet a hitchhiker?
Which OC insists on stopping at every fruit stall to buy snacks and chat with the seller?
Which OC gets accidentally left behind at a stop? How long does it take before anyone realizes that they’re gone?
Which OC buys cheesy souvenirs as keepsakes and to give to their friends who didn’t come with them?
Imagine your OC sitting on the hood of the car with a thermos of hot cocoa in their hands, watching the sun rise
Which OC is on a quest to try as many different kinds of food as they can on this trip?
Which OC points out every strange sign they pass by on the road and reads them aloud to the amusement or annoyance of everyone else?
Which OC has to stop to relieve themself every hour or so?
Imagine your OCs getting pulled into a side quest when one OC claims that they saw a cryptid
What happens when the vehicle runs out of fuel in the middle of nowhere?
Which OC starts taking increasingly daring nature/action photos of themselves and their friends?
Which OC starts out stressed about the amount of work they’re leaving at home, and slowly lets themself have fun?
Imagine your OCs stopping by the side of a quiet road to go stargazing. Bonus points if they all end up falling asleep together, warm, happy, and surrounded by their friends

Handwritten Note-Taking Methods

The appearance and organization of my notes plays a huge role in the amount of time that I dedicate to studying and my overall performance on tests. Therefore, I’ve spent the past several years experimenting with various methods, and these are a few of the techniques that I’ve found to be most beneficial.

Cornell Method

The Cornell Method emphasizes identifying the key points of a textbook passage or lecture and consolidating information as much as possible.

I’ve found that this style works best for literature and science courses that require extensive, dense reading and note-taking. It allows me to easily and quickly identify what I understand versus what I still need to work on.

Adapted Cornell Method

I’ve created my own adaptation of the Cornell Method by eliminating the summary section at the bottom of the page and incorporating Post-It notes throughout the body of the page to highlight lists and key points. And, of course, I had to add some color!

Outline

This is, by far, my favorite method due to its flexibility and clean, minimalist appearance. While the image above doesn’t depict a true series of bullets at varying levels of indentation, you can experiment with different types of bullet points as well as varying spacing.

I prefer using this method for maths because it allows sufficient space for me to draw graphs, record examples, and solve problems.

Mind-Maps

Mind-maps are extremely helpful for organizing complex or extremely confusing topics. There’s no right or wrong way to go about drawing one, and much of the final appearance will be related to the material that you’re diagramming. Keep in mind that certain topics and information will more readily lend itself to this sort of portrayal.

For those of us who aren’t artistically talented 🙋🏼, these can be rather challenging to construct, especially when working with unfamiliar material. In the past, I’ve used mind-maps for history when looking at isolated events or individuals.
